El Retumbe en la Jungla

La Grandeza Revelada

Una noche estaba mirando un documental sobre un famoso combate de boxeo, al que se le conoció por el nombre de “El Retumbe en la Jungla”. La pelea era entre Muhammad Ali (Vuela como una mariposa, pica como una abeja) y George Foreman.
 

El combate se llevó a cabo en Kinshasa, Zaire en 1974. Esta pelea era crucial para Muhammad Ali, quien atravesaba el punto más bajo de su carrera después de haber perdido dos importantes peleas. Ahora se encontraba frente a George Foreman, el imparable y poderoso campeón que estaba obligado a derrotar a Ali.
 

Todo el mundo pensaba que no había forma de que Ali pudiera vencer a Foreman. Éste era un boxeador muy poderoso y Ali era una “bailarina”. Durante las prácticas previas, Foreman golpeaba la bolsa tan fuerte que dejaba una abolladura donde daba el golpe.
 

A pesar de haber perdido sus dos últimas peleas y de conocer el poder de Foreman, Ali siguió diciéndole a la prensa que iba a “matar” a Foreman y que lo iba a hacer quedar mal. Foreman ignoró los comentarios confiado en que iba a derrotar a Ali. Durante su entrenamiento, Foreman practicaba la forma de “achicar el cuadrilátero” para que Ali no pudiera desplazarse y de esa forma librarse de sus poderosos puños. Mientras tanto, Ali seguía practicando sus desplazamientos y no cesaba en las agresiones verbales e insultos hacia Foreman. ¡Claramente, estaba pidiendo ser derrotado!

Foreman hizo todo para acorralar a Ali y lograr que no pudiera desplazarse, poniéndolo contra las cuerdas y descargando golpes masivos sobre su cuerpo y su cabeza. Ali estaba siendo derrotado contra las cuerdas. Aun así, continuó insultando a Foreman en el cuadrilátero. Cada vez que estaban enroscados, uno podía ver a Ali insultando a Foreman. Todo el mundo pensaba que las vueltas de Ali estaban contadas y que en cualquier momento caería derrotado.
 

Entonces algo pasó. Foreman estaba cansado. Para la quinta vuelta se le habían acabado los golpes. Para la octava, estaba en problemas. De la nada, desde lo más profundo, Ali sacó un aluvión de golpes y empujó a Foreman al centro del cuadrilátero. Y tras propinarle otros golpes cuidadosamente calculados, Ali vio cómo el titán Foreman golpeaba el piso del cuadrilátero. Después de la cuenta hasta diez, Muhammad Ali era el campeón. David había vencido a Goliat.
 

Contrariamente a lo pensado, la estrategia de Ali no fue la de “bailar”,  sino la de hacer que Foreman se cansara, ya que sabía que no podría salir airoso de una pelea golpe contra golpe con Foreman. Su ahora famosa estrategia de “encordar a un bobo” funcionó. El heroísmo de Ali fue descripto en la historia del box como “La Grandeza”, pero George Foreman estuvo deprimido durante los dos años siguientes de su vida.
 

Es fácil admirar a un campeón como Ali ya que no se puede negar su grandeza como deportista. Nosotros, como nación, admiramos la fuerza y la destreza. Nos gustan los ganadores.
 

Pero cuando hoy veo a George Foreman el Empresario, siento una admiración aún más profunda. Porque es un hombre que ha sufrido una de las derrotas más grandes en la historia del deporte, frente a todo el mundo, y aun así pudo reinventarse a sí mismo.
 

Foreman surgió como un verdadero campeón humano habiendo acumulado el coraje y la fuerza que poseía en su interior para convertirse en un empresario exitoso y altruista.
 

Dicen que ante la adversidad se revela la verdadera personalidad de un hombre. ¡Bueno, Foreman la ha revelado! Y ha revelado que la derrota no es final ni fatal, sino que todos podemos volver a la senda del triunfo siendo fieles a nosotros mismos. Sin dudas, Foreman ha demostrado que el éxito puede redefinirse. Nos ha revelado que la grandeza no se encuentra en lo que sucede dentro del cuadrilátero cuando todo el mundo está mirando, sino en lo que pasa fuera del cuadrilátero cuando ya a nadie le importa.
 

P/D: Foreman reconquistó su título el 5 de noviembre de 1994, a la edad de 45 años, tras noquear en la 10º vuelta al campeón de la WBA/IBF Michael Moorer, convirtiéndose en el hombre más grande en ganar la corona de los pesos pesados.
¡Eso es personalidad!
