Excusas Siempre Justificadas

Me invitaron al taller de Liderazgo de una conocida compañía de Nueva Jersey que figura entre las 100 compañías principales de acuerdo con el ranking elaborado por la revista Fortune. El evento del día giró en torno a la nueva camada de pasantes. En un momento de mi presentación, hablé sobre las diversas razones que inventamos para no actuar. Aquellas excusas que inventamos para retrasar o diferir nuestros planes de alcanzar el éxito.


Hablé acerca de nuestro mal hábito de “racionalizar” por qué algo no puede hacerse o lograrse. Aplazamos una decisión por alguna de las siguientes razones: No se puede hacer, no tengo tiempo, todavía tengo mucho que hacer, no tengo dinero por eso no es un buen momento. Mi perro está enfermo por eso no tengo ganas de empezar algo nuevo ahora, no soy lo suficientemente inteligente, no estoy calificado... y más bla, bla, bla, bla. ¡Entienden la idea! Racionalizamos por qué no podemos avanzar.
 

¿Alguna vez trataron de analizar la palabra “racionalizar”? Es la capacidad para “racionalizarnos” a nosotros mismos [1]. Eso es lo que hacemos cuando inventamos toda clase de excusas sobre por qué no podemos hacer cosas o por qué no empezamos a hacer algo que debe hacerse. Nos alimentamos con pequeñas dosis de mentiras todos los días; hasta el punto en que nos convencemos de no ACTUAR.


Durante ese mismo taller, un estudiante me preguntó sobre cómo podría hacer para encajar en un trabajo que estuviese fuera de su área de especialización. Le respondí preguntándole cuáles eran algunos de los obstáculos que lo detenían. Él respondió con una letanía de excusas sobre por qué no era capaz de hacerlo (las oficinas no están en el mismo edificio, es difícil complementarse con la gente, es una compañía grande, etc). Pero cada excusa, mientras le explicaba, era justamente eso, una excusa.
 

¡Hay una gran diferencia entre lo imposible y lo inconveniente! Sus excusas eran formas convenientes para no hacer lo que él sabía que tenía que hacer para ser exitoso. Eran obstáculos, excusas de inconveniencia.

Verán, ninguna de sus excusas para encajar y conocer gente fuera de su grupo eran válidas. Él simplemente estaba “racionalizando” las causas que lo llevaban a no hacerlo.
 

Yo también fui una víctima de la “racionalización” y el aplazo de decisiones. Pero a través de los años he mejorado a la hora de hacer cosas y de actuar aun cuando mi mente quería convencerme de lo contrario.
 

Llegué a la conclusión de que los sueños no se disipan de la noche a la mañana. La razón por la que mucha gente no logrará sus objetivos ni hará realidad sus sueños es porque los están “racionalizando” poco a poco, día a día, semana a semana y así sucesivamente.
 

Todos los años tomamos nuevas resoluciones sólo para relegarlas, no de una vez, sino lentamente mediante la retórica impotente de la racionalización.  Cada vez que te demoras en empezar tu misión en la vida, eso significa un día menos que tienes para lograrlo.
 

Entonces, mi pregunta es la siguiente: “¿Qué has estado racionalizando?” “¿Qué sueños y objetivos has estado difiriendo, esperando que llegue el momento?”
 

[1]Aquí el autor ensaya un juego de palabras en inglés cuya traducción al español se hace imposible. Desarmando el término “rationalize”; esto es, racionalizar en español, el autor  sostiene que “the ability to “ration lies” to ourselves”, enfatizando el hecho de que nuestra capacidad de emplear la razón, o racionalizar, se halla en nosotros mismos, quienes somos sus verdaderos depositarios (Nota del Traductor).
