Patrones de Búsqueda

Uno de mis primeros trabajos de pasantía como

estudiante universitario fue trabajar para una compañía de defensa que, en ese momento, desarrollaba un torpedo altamente sofisticado para perseguir y encontrar submarinos y destruirlos. Su funcionamiento era bastante fascinante.

 

El torpedo era lanzado desde la cubierta de un barco o tirado desde un helicóptero al agua. Luego se encendía e iniciaba un modo de búsqueda, en el cual se harían patrones circulares mientras producía un sonido constante. Este sonido es el que realiza el dispositivo de la sonda de ultrasonido cuando quiere hacer rebotar las ondas sonoras en los objetos debajo del agua. Estas ondas sonoras crean ecos de lo que está ubicado bajo el agua. El torpedo tenía lo que se llamaba reconocedor de sintonía submarina, un dispositivo que compara la descripción del eco de cada onda sonora entrante con la base de datos de otras descripciones para determinar cuál es el objeto.
 

Para tener una idea de lo que quiero explicar, piensen que una sintonía submarina es una silueta de un objeto submarino. Cada vez que el torpedo emitía una onda sonora esperaba por el eco. Cada eco (silueta) era comparado a ese eco submarino. El objetivo del torpedo era intentar encontrar objetos bajo el agua que se correspondiesen con la silueta de un submarino.
 

Una vez que detectaba algo que “podía” ser un submarino, el torpedo entonces iba detrás del blanco. A medida que el torpedo se acercaba a su blanco potencial, continuaba realizando ese sonido y comparando cada eco para asegurarse de que el objeto era de hecho un submarino. Cuanto más se acercaba el torpedo, mejor definición tenía del eco.
 

El torpedo podía suspender su “modo de ataque” si, a medida que se acercaba al objetivo adquirido, se daba cuenta de que la silueta no concordaba; si el objetivo era una falsa alarma, se desviaba de su curso. Por ejemplo, el torpedo era capaz de diferenciar un submarino de una ballena, un banco de peces o una formación rocosa bajo el agua. De esta manera, a medida que el torpedo se acercaba y descubría que el objeto no era un submarino, se suspendía y finalizaba su modo de ataque. Luego comenzaba un nuevo patrón de búsqueda otra vez en otra área.
 

El comportamiento del torpedo tiene una lección. Ahora, muchos de ustedes están en el modo búsqueda esperando un objetivo. Están tratando de encontrar algo, algo que los llene, algo que anhelen todos los días.
